Improvisers begin by learning scales and by learning how to emphasize roots, 3rds, and 5ths. Having mastered this, improvisers are playing the changes, which can be a big step towards creating solos that make sense and fit with the song. If you've mastered scales and the ability to emphasize roots, 3rds, and 5ths, try emphasizing 7ths and 9ths. It's a great way for your solos to sound sophisticated and more interesting.
